Lao PDR

The former Kingdom of the white parasol and the land of a million elephants was transformed to Lao PDR in December 1975 after a long struggle period for the people's revolutionary party.

The country extends along the Mekong river for more than 650 miles with a total area of 236'800 square kilometers.

Population

No accurate census of the Laos population has been taken since the early 1960's.

Current population total is estimated to be around 4,8 million and made up of 68 different ethnic groups.

Language

The official language of the Lao PDR is Lao spoken and written nationwide. However

English and French are widely used in government offices and in business correspondence.

Climate

Lao PDR has two seasons with the hottest months being April and May with average temperatures around 35° C. During the summer months March to October you can expect temperatures between 20° C and 25° C. During the dry winter period from November to April temperatures can reach freezing point in the mountains and along the Mekong river at night it can be quite chilly. This winter period is the most acceptable for touring.
